User Agents

Agility lets you define User Agents that will be used initially in the new URL Redirections feature.  A User Agent is a string of characters that a browser sends to a website so that the website can change its behaviour if needed.  For instance, if the website detects a User Agent string for a mobile browser, you may want to redirect to a different URL that has a mobile formatted site.

User Agent settings can be found in the Settings section.

We’ve preloaded 4 User Agent combinations into Agility for you:

  1. Desktop Current
    • The current desktop browser versions for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and others.
  2. Desktop Retro
    • The previous generation of browser versions, such as Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox 2.
  3. Mobile Current
    • The current generation of mobile browser versions, such as iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7.
  4. Mobile Retro
    • Older mobile phones, such as Windows Mobile 6 and older Blackberry versions.

You can customize these User Agent combinations and even add your own to fit your requirements.  Enter a portion of the User Agent that you want to target on each line of the User Agent details dialog.  The matching algorithm will look for any occurrence of that text in the User Agent string sent to the website by browser.

Here is an example of a User Agent for Firefox 4 on Windows 7: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:2.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0.1

This site has a fairly comprehensive list of User Agent strings from a variety of browsers and platforms: http://www.useragentstring.com/pages/useragentstring.php
